I know I’m a day late, but I have a really good excuse. Like, *really* good. I’m currently in St. Louis for the Realm Makers writers conference, and I’m having the time of my life— meeting other nerds, learning craft from nerds, and dressing up like a nerd. Writers are an amazing crowd. And it’s especially fun to be in a crowd of writers like me.
Anyway, back to business. Meet Prince Cerdic, the protagonist for my YA fantasy trilogy, Prince of the Barbarians. He’s quite a character.
Cerdic is the crown prince of Traith, but he’s a little disenchanted with the royal life. He’s seen first-hand, being king isn’t all fun and games. So when his stepmother, the queen, assassinates his father, he finds himself swallowed in danger, intrigue, and the opportunity of a lifetime.
Cerdic is quirky and awkward, but in all the best ways. I’ve always loved his cluelessness and naïveté. Of course, he makes bad choices. He does stupid things. He hijacks the plot. We argue. We yell at each other. And his sass levels are off the charts. But when all is said and done, he’s my favorite protagonist I’ve ever written. .
Funny story about the picture I’ve chosen to represent Cerdic: As I was browsing through Pinterest, putting pictures in my “Inspiration for POTB folder, I kept finding these great pictures of a dashing young man in royal—or at least fancy—attire. Some of the pictures were of an actor who had played Pip in a movie adaptation of Great Expectations (one of my favorite novels), and others were of a fellow who played Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. I hadn’t seen either film, but the pictures were nice.
When I looked through all the pictures I’d chosen, turns out, they’re all of the same actor. Congratulations, Douglas Booth. I don’t know your movies, but you have the face of Prince Cerdic.
Do you know any actors who happen to look like your characters?
