Sleep is important. For your physical health, for healing and repair of your heart, for breathing, for stress hormones, blood sugars. The human body relies on sleep in order to function, but yet so many of us struggle to get a good night’s rest.When we are left with our own thoughts as soon as our head hits the pillow, it's sometimes hard to switch off, so here are my top tips for a good night's kip. Annnnd just before your critter brain pipes up with ‘Like I’ve got time to do this with 500 kids’, ‘meditation is for hippy’s’, ‘I don’t have time for this every night’… Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and strokes. Your body needs sleep to fight infections. So in short, if you want to be in control of your health, you have to be in control of your sleep. Introduce a herbal tea to your evening routine, every night. Choose one with calming & soothing ingredients to relax your Joints & muscles. I choose a caffeine free tea from @arbonne which contains Dandelion root, licorice, peppermint and milk thistle. Having a 'wind down' period is important before hopping straight into bed. 2-3 pages a night of any reading material (Book/ magazine/ newspaper) can be enough to make you sleepy after a long day. Try avoid using anything with a blue light during this time (Phone/ TV/ Laptop). Use the Insight timer app as a tool to nod off. Go to the 'Sleep' section and choose one which sounds good to you and a long enough duration (I usually choose 20 mins +). Focus on your breath, listen to the words or the music, bring all your thoughts inwards and notice how your body feels. This will be hard at first but just like anything, practice makes perfect. Being in routine is difficult so whatever your bed time is, these three steps could help you switch off quicker than usual. Be consistent & persistent.
