My next tattoo represents Tibet. Although I did have it done by the fantastic people at @mohanstattooinnny
in KTM, Nepal.
But only because it would have been impossible to have this tattoo done in China.
It's a snow lion.
The Snow Lion is a celestial animal of Tibet. It symbolizes fearlessness and unconditional cheerfulness, the personification of primordial playfulness, joy and bliss. It has a mind free of doubt, clear and precise. It has a beauty and dignity resulting from a body and mind that are synchronized. The Snow Lion has a youthful, vibrant energy of goodness and a natural sense of delight.
In Buddhism the Snow Lion is the protector of Buddha and in paintings and sculpture is usually seen as holding up the Buddha's throne.
The roar of the Snow Lion embodies the sound of 'emptiness' (Sanskrit: Śūnyatā), courage and truth, and because of this is often a synonym for the Buddha dharma as it implies freedom from karma and the challenging call to awakening. It was considered to be so powerful that just a single roar could cause seven dragons to fall from the sky.
Although the Snow Lion can't fly it never touches the ground. Their existence is a playful 'continuum' of leaping from mountain peak to mountain peak. The energetic potency of the Snow Lion is expressed in eternal play.
The snow Lion is the national emblem of Tibet seen on the national flag of Tibet.
Tibet and tibetan Buddhism have fascinated me since my childhood.
So it was a dream come true when I managed to travel there for myself. To see the home of his holyness the Dalai Lama. The see the oppression of the Tibetan people by the Chinese government on-going since the brutal invasion by the Chinese in 1950.
Still today average tibetans have very few human rights.
So one the one hand I see myself in the joyful, playful side of the Snow Lion. But I also wish to be like the lion. I hope to have a mind as clear and as free of doubt as it does.
But my tattoo also represents solidarity with the many lovely tibetan people I met who wish to live in peace. To have human rights like they deserve.
