Excited for my opening tonight! It has been an awesome few days already in Charlotte, meeting and discussing art and film with numerous people. Exhibition reception is tonight at 5:30pm at @sozogallery and there is a private lecture tomorrow at 10:30am with @iamfujimura and myself that will be hosted by the esteemed Jennifer Sudul Edwards.
One more day until my exhibition “Lessons in Remembering” opens in Charlotte, NC at @sozogallery : opening reception is 5:30-8:30 Friday the 15th. It is an exciting week here in Charlotte with @nba All Star Weekend taking place as well. Going to be some fun things happening and I can wait to share them with you down the road!
At the gallery earlier today thinking and processing the work today. I spent some deep time talking with it, writing about it, discussing my feelings and emotions in the space with myself. A great start to the day. Thanks to everyone for your support, conversations and love!
Excited to be sharing these two pieces in my exhibition opening in Charlotte this Friday night!- they will be included in the work for “Lessons in Remembering”. Show will be up through March so make sure to visit @sozogallery

I had an incredible studio visit with @jonni_cheatwood yesterday in downtown LA, it was awesome to sit and talk life and art career’s and everything else in between. We even got some incredible Basquiat stories from one of Jean Michel’s old friends. Make sure to follow Jonni’s work, he is extremely talented, dedicated and an incredible soul. Thanks for the moment my friend.
Made a short last night using video I took of Makoto Fujimura painting in progress and video by Steven Proctor that was being projected on another Fujimura painting. The three pieces of art played off of each other in the same way I feel memory plays in our minds. My show “Lessons in Remembering” opens next Friday at Sozo Gallery in Charlotte and these pieces took me into deep memories- I paired them with Antony & the Johnsons “Water and Dust”.

I have been thinking deeply as of late about “getting out of the way of my work.” Maybe I need to spend the majority of my time and thought before I reach the canvas. Then I can remove myself and let my consciousness move and breathe into the canvas. I have been discussing this with myself because I feel as if I am constantly over working my pieces at times, “getting in the way”. After a day at @thebroadmuseum and @moca having conversations with my mentors and peers whose lives remain on the walls, I felt some of the agreeing with me and pushing me to continue this conversation. (Today’s headache:)
“Where do we fit in culture’s narrative? How does our work share in the ongoing story? How can we contribute to the ongoing ebb and flow of life in our short journey’s? What does it really mean to be an artist, a creator? How can we assist in the remembering of the past and use it to influence the future?” These are questions I wrestle with and ask myself on a regular basis and that I hope we can all discuss together during my opening at @sozogallery in Charlotte, NC. See you next week Charlotte!
Excited for my opening in Charlotte, NC next week at @sozogallery for “Lessons in Remembering”: the work is all based on the art of practicing memory and the importance of remembering. Would love for you to join me at the opening on the 15th!

Excited to share my series “Lessons in Remembering” in my solo exhibition at @sozogallery : Opening Feb 15th. The entire body of work revolves around our memory and how we can practice the art of Remembering, as well as it’s importance to us human beings. See you in Charlotte!
“It is selfish, perhaps, to think that a work of art speaks to any one of us. But in the right moment it can voice what we can’t say, or don’t yet know.” - Joshua Rivkin
